Will there be anything else, madame?â Keeping his eyes glued to the floor, Torbrick placed a humongous roasted turkey on our table. Juicy meat and cornbread stuffing spilled over the edges of the platter.
After dunking his head into a trough outside to remove the smell as per Averyâs instruction, the bugbear had delivered us a buffet of delicious food. Mashed potatoes and gravy, pistachio cream-filled pastries, and steaming buttered rolls. Torbrick had to slide an extra table over next to ours just to hold it all.
âYes, Torbrick. I would like a carafe of pomegranate juice, please, and some of Carmenâs candy floss should do the trick,â Avery replied. âHave you tried it yet?â She tilted her head toward me.
Miles nodded eagerly.
âOh, and Iâd like a spiced cider while youâre out,â Carl added.
âUh . . . uh . . . pomegranate juice, candy floss, and a . . . a spiced cider.â Torbrick scribbled the items on a crinkled piece of paper. âVery well, I shall be back in a jiffy,â he announced, studying his list. âThough might I just say . . . it seems an odd request for pomegranate juice. I doubt any business sells it and certainly not at this hour.â
âItâs the Festival of Bonnie Barters, Torbrick. Iâm sure youâll find a way,â Avery said, leveling her eyes at the beast.
âYes, well, I meant no business around here,â he clarified, looking hopeful as he swirled his clawed finger in the air.
âThen I suppose youâll have to venture farther north in the city.â
Torbrick paled. âNorth? What, with all that merriment and happiness going on all about? I donât really want to . . .â
Avery cleared her throat. âShould I give you a reminder of what happens to bugbears who defy me?â
Torbrick hastily shook his head.
âThen scoot,â she demanded
Without another peep, Torbrick skulked out the door.
âThis is amazing,â Vanessa said, slicing into a piece of turkey oozing with juices. âYou didnât have to do all this for us. Iâm not complaining, of course.â
âYeah,â Miles agreed, his cheeks crammed with at least three buttered rolls. âThis has to be expensive.â
âOh, it definitely is,â Avery replied. âBut we wonât be paying, and neither will you. Not after how cruelly he treated you.â
âOkay, I just have to know. How did you do that?â I asked, swallowing a bite of turkey and wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. âTorbrick was terrified of you.â
âIt comes with the territory,â Avery said, sharing a look with Carl. âThroughout our Quests, weâve developed a reputation around these parts. Torbrick may be a slobbering idiot, but heâs no fool.â
For the next little while, we stuffed our faces with as much food as we could handle while Avery and Carl shared amazing tales from their adventures. They had seen it all, had been all over the map, and had slain many impressive monsters. Sea monsters, vampires, the Quavering Queen of the Wolvesâthat story had us all on the edge of our seats. Before they had been drawn
